Preparing for your MOT
When your car goes in for an MOT test there are many parts of the vehicle that are checked to make sure it is roadworthy.
We have listed the main things to check to help you pass first time.
Lighting and signalling account for almost 30% of all MOT faults.
Before your MOT ask someone to walk around the vehicle while you operate the lights and signals from the driver’s seat, asking them if they all work and point in the right direction.
Also, Check the vehicle’s horn, battery, electrical wiring, and towbar.
Steering and suspension
Strength and condition of the steering wheel is a key fact. Also check the suspension for corrosion, fractures, and distortion.
Almost 10% of MOT fails are due to brakes.
Check the condition of the brakes, pedals, and levers, as well as any relevant warning lights.
The legal limit is 1.6mm, and must not be below.
Tyres will also be examined for cuts in excess of 25mm, bulges, lumps, exposure of the cord and thread separation.
Make sure that all seat belts are working correctly including restraint systems.
Body and structure
